Frans Schrofer

Designer, Frans Schrofer, was born in the Netherlands and comes from a long line of artists, craftsmen and teachers spanning many generations. A childhood fascination with cars and motor racing led Frans to an early basic education in electrical and mechanical engineering, and auto mechanics. In 1983 he graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven and in 1984, he established his design firm, Studio Schrofer.

Over the years, Studio Schrofer has developed numerous furniture and accessory collections with universal appeal, and worked with a wide variety of global partners. Creating imaginative forms, utilising new and old materials, drawing on traditional methods and employing new technology, Studio Schrofer develops design concepts for the ever-changing lifestyles of aesthetic 'conscience consumers'.

Frans' strong technical background, combined with his experience in consumer packaging, has provided him with a unique insight into how to evoke emotion from natural shapes and lines. This has become the design signature of Studio Schrofer. However, a feel for style and comfort is perhaps an inherited trait as well. Born into a family of artists and furniture designers, Frans Schrofer is the son of Willem Schrofer, a renowned painter in the abstract style of Mondriaan and van Doesburg, and the nephew of Jan Schrofer, a co-founder of Cirkel (merged with Ahrend in 1950s), who co-developed the iconic Revolt chair with Friso Kramer. Following in their footsteps, Frans Schrofer, himself, is recognised as an influential presence in the design industry today, involved in encouraging young designers and driving innovation.
